Late Model Toyota Brake Squeal: Causes and Fixes

Late-model Toyota trucks and SUVs have developed a reputation for brake squeal issues, especially at low speeds and while reversing. Ever since the Toyota Tundra redesign for the 2022 model year, owners have frequently complained about high-pitched brake squeal. After the release of the redesigned 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser and 2025 Toyota 4Runner, similar complaints have also become increasingly common on these models.


The brake squeal issue has become significant enough that Toyota has released multiple Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) attempting to address the problem. I have personally performed these TSB repairs on Toyota Tundras, Land Cruisers, and 4Runners, with mixed long-term results.

In many cases, the updated brake components reduce the severity of the noise. However, I have also seen vehicles return with brake squeal still present even after the redesigned parts were installed exactly as directed by the TSB procedures. Typically, the noise becomes less severe after repair, but can still remain noticeable to owners.

While I have never seen a detailed engineering explanation for the squeal, my personal opinion is that modern brake pad formulations are attempting to balance several competing goals simultaneously:

  • Long brake pad life
  • Reduced brake dust
  • Low rolling resistance and brake drag
  • Improved fuel economy

Unfortunately, achieving all of these characteristics at the same time can sometimes create conditions where brake squeal develops at low speeds, especially during light brake application or while reversing.

From my own observations, the late-model Toyota brake systems generally perform very well in terms of brake pad longevity and low brake dust production. However, these benefits may come at the cost of increased sensitivity to vibration and harmonic noise under certain conditions.

After performing my own experimentation and testing, I have also identified additional products and techniques that can help eliminate these brake squeal issues more effectively than the factory TSB repairs alone.
